Chapter 11 â The Doomed Prince
This story begins with the agony of a king without an heir.
He was the king of all Egypt, worshiped as the son of Ra and the father of his people. Yet, he had no son to continue his royal line. Every night, the king would pray earnestly to the gods to make his wife fertile and bear him a son. He also gave many offerings to appease the gods of fertility. One day, he received a promise that his wife would bear a son. And so, she did.
The king called a grand celebration in honor of the gods for answering his prayers. As was the norm, the royal family consulted with the Seven Hathors, deities revered as knowing mortalsâ fates. They needed to hear what the princeâs fate would be.
Unfortunately, the Seven Hathors foretold that a horrible untimely death would befall the prince. He would be killed by a crocodile, dog, or snake.
When the king heard this, he was sorely afraid. He mourned the fate of his son along with his queen. He was as good as heirless, and there was almost no changing their fate. However, the king of Egypt was willing to take his chances.
He immediately ordered for a fortress to be built in the mountains for the prince to live in. It was made from the finest materials in the land and furnished to royal taste. Everything the young prince needed to live in comfort and luxury was provided in the fortress, and the prince was moved there to live out his childhood.
The years passed, and as the prince grew, his curiosity about the world beyond the walls around him grew. He would look from the top of the roof at the horizon, unable to tell what the world felt like. One day, he saw a strange creature wandering outside the walls. He had never seen it before, but it was nothing like a man or a woman.
The young prince asked one of his servants what it was, and he learned that it was a dog. The prince was fascinated by it, and he petitioned his father to let him possess one. The king refused, remembering the prophecy of the Seven Hathors, but the prince was unrelenting until his desire was fulfilled.
That was not the end of it. The prince demanded to know the reason behind his imprisonment and why he could not live with his family.
The king and queen realized that the time had come to tell the prince his destiny. The prince received the knowledge of his fate with bravery. He asked that he be allowed to explore the world for the rest of his days on Earth. The king and queen were reluctant to send off their only son into a world of uncertainty and danger, but once again, they granted him his wish.
So, the prince and his dog set off on an adventure far beyond the shores of Egypt. The prince had no destination in mind, but he went toward the east, led by his own whims.
